First, you’ll need to have all your connecting cables or docks, software and the music you want to download in place.

As not all portable devices are created equally, you may need your manual to tell you where to begin. This is especially true if you’re a total newbie to a particular media player or to MP3 players in general. However, most portable devices usually work in the same manner, so in order to download music to MP3 players you should follow the same, or at least similar, steps.

Hopefully your MP3 player can hook up to your computer using a USB connection; this would be the easiest way to download music to a MP3 player. Just transfer music files as you would other files and documents to a removable disk drive and copy and paste.

To have organized playlists here’s a useful tip; before downloading music onto your MP3 player you can create the folders beforehand and just sequence the music into the folders while you’re on your computer. This will save you valuable time in the long run because you’ll be able to locate the songs you want to listen to very quickly.

The accompanying software is important because some computers will need them to recognize your MP3 player when you insert it as a USB drive. If you don’t have the software – for example, you’re using a different computer to download music or you were so excited to buy your MP3 player that you don’t remember where you put your software CD – you can probably search for it online. Once your MP3 player is recognized, downloading music will be easy.

Creative Zen players work in this manner, but will ask the user to employ Creative Media Explorer to ease up the transfer of files from your computer to your MP3 player. Creative MediaSource Organizer, meanwhile, helps you organize your files on your computer before downloading the music onto your MP3 player. Antonio Aguilar reigned among the most popular Mexican singers and actors of his generation, recording more than 150 traditional mariachi albums and a staggering 167 feature films during the course of a career spanning more than a half century. Dubbed “El Charro de México,” Aguilar invariably appeared on-stage and onscreen in the sequined garb of the rodeo rider, complete with sombrero. His popularity at home was matched by an enormous fan base of Latinos living in the US, and in 1997 he broke box-office records by selling out New York City’s Madison Square Garden across six consecutive nights. Born Pascual Antonio Aguilar Barraza outside of Villanueva, Mexico, on May 17, 1919, he began riding horses as a toddler, with a habit of singing while in the saddle. As a teen, he entered the US as an illegal immigrant, settling in Los Angeles and working as a waiter while saving money in hopes of funding acting and singing classes. Upon returning to Mexico in 1945 Aguilar pursued a career in opera, but a friend recommended he instead try his hand at mariachi and “use that powerful voice to sing the songs of the people.” By 1950 he was recording, and that same year made his film debut alongside Mexican cinema legends Pedro Infante and Marga Lopez in Un Rincón Cerca del Cielo. With 1956′s Tierra de Hombres Aguilar landed his first starring role, and in the years to follow he emerged as the biggest draw in Mexican moviemaking. Microphone

Mixing console (also soundboard or audio mixer)

This is an electronic device used to combine (or mix), route, and change the level, tone quality and dynamics of audio signals. Studio (or reference) monitors

In other words, the frequency of the sound is not manipulated by the monitors and no distortion takes place. As a result, these monitors are more robust (and expensive) than home hi-fi speakers, as they have to cope with high volumes and sudden sound bursts that may happen in the studio.

Digital audio workstation (DAW)

This workstation is an electronic system designed to record, edit and play back digital audio. With this piece of music studio equipment, recorded sounds can be freely manipulated, edited and played back. The DAW can also be used to convert signals from analogue to digital and vice versa.

It’s worth pointing out that some organisations that have never received ACE funding before are now getting some – a fact that’s been a bit overlooked by many of us – though there will be losers too. Extremely sad this morning to hear of the death of Robert Tear, one of the greatest singers and ‘characters’ of the British opera world over the past half century. He was 72.

I’ve been listening to Bob singing for as long as I can remember, but certain occasions stand out as utterly unforgettable. His Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw can scarcely have been bettered: while his presence could emanate sinister power almost effortlessly, the beauty of his voice gave the character its essential extra dimension of seductiveness. At the opposite end of the spectrum, he was in Glyndebourne’s Die Fledermaus a few years ago singing Dr Falke the lawyer – a production which included a little coup-de-theatre in the last act when Falke’s cloak was pulled off him, abruptly revealing that he was wearing a petticoat. “What’s that?” bellowed Eisenstein. The reply: “It’s my Freudian slip!” And at the UK premiere of Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane at the RFH in 2007, Bob sang the short role of the Blind Judge. His was the finest voice on the platform.

It was on that occasion that I met him for the first time. I’d just been in France for the premiere of my play about Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time; Bob became very interested since he had known Messiaen well and worked with him. He said that he was winding down his singing career (and his last operatic appearance was in Turandot at the ROH two years ago), but was still interested in performing as an actor or reader. The upshot was that he and I gave the UK premiere of the play together at Lake District Summer Music 2008, in the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.

It was astonishing to be on stage with him. The stage is not my natural environment and appearing alongside such a legend is a tall order. But he was such a strong, reassuring, comforting presence – able to inhabit a role so entirely, even when simply reading – that I was able to “lose myself”, forget nerves and respond with all I could muster. With his wife, Hilary, and our team of musicians including Charles Owen and Philippe Graffin, we had a ball in the festival, too, huddling together for warmth in Lake District pubs and watching the rain…

Bob was not just a great singer, but a Renaissance man, fascinated by literature, art and issues mystical. His favourite pastime seemed, indeed, to be painting and he also wrote some amazing texts, short stories which I was privileged to read; his poetry also featured in a Christmas carol, ‘Winter’s Wait’, which was performed at King’s College Cambridge last year. He was a vivacious and irrepressible dinner guest, regaling us with hilarious stories from his life as a larger-than-life figure in a larger-than-life profession; and his West London home seemed to buzz with the spirits of all the creative powerhouses who had passed through its portals over the years.

I phoned him just before Christmas to ask whether he would be interested in doing another reading of the play this spring. He told me he wasn’t taking on any more work of any kind and mentioned that he hadn’t been very well, but if this was in fact a serious illness he gave no indication of the fact. My thoughts today are very much with Hilary and their two daughters.
